Bangladesh Coach Mohammad Salahuddin Slams Former Adviser Over T20 World Cup Exit Controversy

A fresh controversy has erupted in Bangladesh cricket after Bangladesh coach Mohammad Salahuddin strongly criticised former sports adviser Asif Nazrul over conflicting statements surrounding the team’s withdrawal from the T20 World Cup 2026. The assistant coach accused Nazrul of presenting distorted facts and taking a sudden U-turn on who was responsible for the decision that ultimately shattered the players’ dreams.

The issue centres on Bangladesh’s refusal to travel to India for their scheduled matches in the tournament. According to Bangladesh coach Mohammad Salahuddin, the players had no involvement whatsoever in the decision, contrary to recent claims made by the former adviser.

Conflicting Statements Spark Row

Asif Nazrul had served under the interim government led by Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus. Initially, he publicly stated that the government decided against sending the Bangladesh team to India due to security concerns. However, shortly before resigning from his post, Nazrul reportedly changed his stance, suggesting that the decision had been taken by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and the players themselves.

This shift in narrative did not sit well with the team management.

Speaking candidly, Bangladesh coach Mohammad Salahuddin dismissed Nazrul’s revised statement as false. He insisted that the players were never consulted nor involved in the final call. “There was no role of the players in the decision not to travel to India,” Salahuddin said, expressing disbelief over the former adviser’s claims.

‘How Can I Face the Players?’

Salahuddin, who is also an academic by profession, voiced his deep disappointment at what he described as a public misrepresentation of the truth. He pointed out that Nazrul is a respected professor at Dhaka University — one of the country’s most prestigious institutions — and said he found it difficult to comprehend how such contradictory statements could be made openly.

“I am a teacher myself, and teachers generally avoid speaking untruths,” Salahuddin remarked. “How can I face the young players if such statements are made? First one thing was said, then a complete U-turn was taken.”

The controversy has further intensified public debate in Bangladesh about accountability and transparency in sports administration.

ICC Rejects Alternative Proposal

After deciding not to travel to India, the Bangladesh Cricket Board reportedly proposed that their matches be relocated to co-host Sri Lanka instead. However, the International Cricket Council (ICC) declined the request. As a result, Bangladesh were replaced in the tournament lineup, with Scotland taking their spot.

For the players, the decision proved devastating.

Bangladesh coach Mohammad Salahuddin revealed that hearing the news of their exit from the T20 World Cup 2026 was an emotional blow for the squad. “When a player prepares for a World Cup, he carries a lifelong dream with him,” he said. “My own dream has been alive for 27 years. It was shattered in a second.”

Players Left Mentally Shattered

Perhaps the most alarming revelation from Salahuddin was the mental toll the decision took on certain members of the squad. He claimed that two players were left in a state of severe emotional distress for nearly five days after learning they would not be participating in the tournament.

“I know two of my players who were mentally broken for five days,” he said. “It was like they went into a mental coma.”

The coach clarified that while both he and the players are prepared to make sacrifices for national interests if required, the pain stemmed from how the matter was communicated and later portrayed publicly.

“If it was purely a national decision taken for security reasons, we would accept it and sacrifice without hesitation,” he explained. “But when you speak about damage, I will talk about the damage done to my players. Their dreams were broken.”

Call for Transparency

Salahuddin suggested that clearer communication and honest explanations could have prevented much of the distress and controversy. He believes that if the situation had been presented transparently from the beginning, many people-including players and fans-might have understood the reasoning behind the decision.

The episode has cast a shadow over Bangladesh’s T20 World Cup preparations and raised wider questions about governance and crisis management in international cricket.

As the debate continues, Bangladesh coach Mohammad Salahuddin remains firm in defending his players, insisting they should not be blamed for a decision in which they had no part. For the squad, the missed opportunity represents not just a sporting setback, but the crushing of ambitions they had worked towards for years.

With emotions still running high, the Bangladesh cricket community now looks ahead, hoping for clarity, accountability, and a chance to rebuild confidence ahead of future international competitions.
